Driver Job Description

Position title: Truck Driver

Description Summary: The purpose of this position is to safely operate tractor trailers in order to deliver our products to our customers in a safe and timely manner.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct pre-trip inspection daily on tractor and trailer as required per Section 392.7 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMSCR) in addition to the following:
    • Checking coolant and engine oil levels
    • Checking tires for 100psi
    • Checking for dents, scratches, cut tires
    • Verifying that all lights, decals, etc. are not obscured before leaving
  • Driving a tractor-trailer with a GCVW of up to 80,000 and a manual transmission safely and efficiently.
  • Assisting in loading and/ or unloading whenever necessary including but not limited to:
    • Climbing in and out of tractor to release tailgate switch
    • Climbing in and out of tractor to apply and release safety pins
    • Climbing in and out of trailer to apply tarp, level load, and/ or clean side rails
    • Using a shovel or scraper to assist unloading or to level an unleveled load
    • Using a shovel to level the ground being dumped on
    • Backing in and out of crowded and small construction zones
    • Checking tires every two hours or 100 miles
  • Conduct a post-trip inspection daily
  • Keep inside of truck neat, clean, and organized including glass floors and storage compartments
  • Completely fill out all applicable paperwork daily including:
    • Company trip sheet
    • Driver's daily log
    • Scale and hourly tickets
    • Driver vehicle condition report
  • Determining the proper times and places to report for work the following day

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education and experience:
    • one year verifiable tractor-trailer experience
  • Special Requirements:
    • Valid Class A CDL
    • Ability to communicate effectively with fellow employees, scale people, and jobsite personnel
    • Ability to spend up to one week away from home with little or no prior notice
    • No more than two tickets in the past thirty-six months from either moving violations or accidents
    • Minimum of 25 years of age (Earth Transport Co. may waive this rule)
    • Never been convicted of a felony (Earth Transport Co. may waive this rule)
    • Pass a road test under the supervision of a designated company representative
    • Successfully pass a driver's physical examination as described in part 391.1 FMCSR
    • Successfully pass a controlled substance screen as described in part 391 Subpart H, FMCSR
    • Fill out an application that meets section 391.21 of the FMCSR

Driver Pay: Drivers are paid a commission of the revenue of the truck they while they operate it, unless otherwise specified.  The commission will vary according to the specific tractor and trailer the driver is operating.  After five years of service, an employee will receive an increase of 0.5% in their commission.  After ten years of service, an employee will receive another 0.5% increase in their commission.  Overtime at the rate of 1.5 times regular hourly pay rate is paid in the form of a premium for all hours exceeding 40 hours per week.
